Save, Share, Import, Download, and Embed a Wheel

What each WheelOSpin sharing feature does, what stays in local storage, and which information is placed in a shared URL.

WheelOSpin offers several ways to move or present a wheel. They are not interchangeable: automatic saving is local to one browser, a share link places entries in the URL, a download is a picture, and an embed loads a dedicated interactive frame.

Automatic local saving

When you edit a wheel, WheelOSpin stores its entries, weights, recent history, statistics, theme, and selected settings in your browser’s localStorage. The data stays associated with that browser profile and wheel identifier.

Local saving means:

  • no account is required;
  • closing and reopening the page can restore the wheel;
  • another browser or device will not automatically receive it;
  • clearing site data, using private browsing, or a browser cleanup can remove it;
  • anyone using the same browser profile may be able to see the saved entries.

Avoid entering passwords, confidential notes, or sensitive personal information. For classroom names, use a managed device, clear the list when it is no longer needed, and do not publish the share URL.

Importing a list

Choose Import and paste either one item per line or a comma-separated list. The Replace existing items option decides whether the imported rows replace or extend the current wheel.

Review the resulting list for:

  • blank rows;
  • accidental duplicates;
  • commas that were meant to be part of one label;
  • people or options that are no longer eligible;
  • very long labels that will be shortened visually on the wheel.

Import changes the active browser copy. It does not upload a spreadsheet file to a WheelOSpin account.

Copy Link creates a URL whose items query parameter contains the current entries. Someone who opens that link receives those entries in the wheel.

Because the list is part of the URL:

  • it may appear in browser history;
  • it may be copied into chat previews or server logs;
  • a long list creates a long link;
  • the recipient can edit the entries after opening it;
  • the link is not access-controlled or encrypted.

Do not share a URL containing private names or confidential choices. For a public template, use generic labels or information you are comfortable publishing.

Downloading an image

Download creates a PNG rendering of the wheel. The file is a static picture: viewers cannot spin it, edit entries, inspect weights, or verify the selection logic. Use it for a slide or handout, not as evidence of a completed draw.

The exported image reflects the current wheel labels and colors. Check the image before sharing, especially when labels contain personal information.

Embedding a wheel

Embed creates an iframe that points to WheelOSpin’s dedicated /embed/ view. The entries are encoded in the iframe URL so the embedded wheel can load without an account or server-side saved record.

The embed view contains the interactive wheel and essential controls without the full site navigation. The host website controls the surrounding page, dimensions, privacy notice, and audience.

Important limitations:

  • changing the original browser wheel does not update an already copied embed code;
  • anyone who can read the iframe URL can read the encoded entries;
  • a host website can stop an iframe from loading through its own Content Security Policy;
  • browser or network privacy tools may block third-party frames;
  • the embed is not a signed or tamper-proof configuration.

Moving a wheel between devices

For a non-sensitive list, a share link is the quickest transfer method. Open it on the second device, check the entries, and then edit or save locally. For a sensitive list, transfer the text through an approved secure channel and import it directly rather than placing it in a URL.

Resetting local information

The Clear control removes active entries, while browser site-data settings can remove all saved WheelOSpin state. Reset Statistics clears the displayed session counts. If a device is being handed to another person, use the browser’s site-data controls to remove stored entries rather than relying only on a cleared visible list.
